In the second episode of the first season, aptly named "Deep Throat", he introduced himself to Mulder in the men's washroom, telling him that his and Agent Scully's lives are in danger, as they knew too much about the government's involvement with aliens. He had access to information which was strictly classified and he had a few times given the agents false information to try to get them out of cases which could expose him. Deep Throat had followed Mulder's work very closely since he had been recruited into the FBI Academy, and he seemed to sometimes know more about Mulder than Mulder did. He rarely answered questions directly, instead giving a cryptic clue to get Mulder to investigate himself. It was never clear during most of the first season whether he was on the side of truth or conspiracy. In the episode "Ghost in the Machine" he gave Mulder
information on the government's achievement of artificial intelligence,
apparently decades from being mastered. In the episode "Fallen
Angel" he saved Mulder from being dismissed by the FBI.
In "Eve" Deep Throat told Mulder about an experiment
called the Leitchfield experiment in which clones were being
created, the females all named Eve and the males all named Adam.
In the episode "E.B.E." he gave Mulder information
on a UFO shot down in Iraq which was being transported across
the US by truck. In the season finale, "The Erlenmeyer Flask",
he showed his loyalty to Mulder by risking his neck to save Mulder.
He was consequently shot by a member of a covert organization,
and uttered his final words to Scully, "Trust no one."
