Mr. X

He was Deep Throat's successor as Mulder's informant. To initiate contact, Mulder used masking tape to form and "X" on his apartment window. Whereas Deep Throat was trying to atone for past deeds by giving Mulder enough information to further Mulder's search for the truth, X was much more ambiguous about his motivations and certainly more reluctant and cryptic in providing information.

Mr. X has proved to be a ruthless man not to be trifled with. He has literally went head-to-head with Skinner in an elevator and warned him he had "killed mean for far less". He calmly executed an operative dispatched to steal a vial of Scully's blood and ruthlessly killed the Red-Haired Man before helping Mulder escape from a bomb-laden train car. Mulder and X later engaged in a brutal confrontation for possession of the alien stiletto-like weapon before going for their handguns.

After years of covertly trying to undermine the Syndicate's activities, X was identified as a traitor and was shot to death at close-range by the Gray-Haired Man in the hallway of Mulder's apartment house. During the last moments of his life, X was able to crawl into Mulder's apartment and wrote the initials "SRSG" in his own blood on the floor.
